For many Australians, Asia, especially South-East Asia, provides their first view of the world beyond these shores. Geographically (if not culturally) we are part of Asia & this is reflected in a huge range of direct flights available to a host of Asian cities from all mainland capitals.

The beach resorts of Bali and Thailand (government warnings notwithstanding) still offer fantastic value for travellers on all budgets and in terms of ease of travel and value for money, both are good first overseas destinations for young travellers.

Vietnam has become an Australian favourite in the last decade and Cambodia and Laos are likely to follow. China has moved from a difficult and exotic destination to the mainstream and India and Nepal have been part of the travel circuit since the 1960's.

The middle-east is going through a difficult time at the moment but Syria and Jordan (along with Egypt) still retains strong popularity with Aussie backpackers.

The following is essential travel information for visitors to selected Asian destinations. This is not an exhaustive list but centres on those countries most likely visited by Australians. It includes visa advice, location of Australian consular assistance and airlines offering services there from Australia.

Pay particular attention to visa requirements - many Asian countries require pre-obtained visas. Also this is a part of the world (Malaysia, Indonesia) that makes a big deal about you having at least 6 months validity on your passport. If you have less than a year left to run on it its best to renew.-
