Canadian Money Information

Canada offers a reasonably good exchange rate for Aussies as currently one Aussie dollar gets you 90 Canadian Cents.

If you are working full time you must pay income tax even as a temporary resident and once you arrive the first thing you will need is a SIN or Social Insurance Number (did nobody in the Canadian government think that this acroynm was a bit strange?) The SIN is similar to our TFN or tax file number and it should be the first thing you organise when you arrive in Canada. The best and quickest way to apply for an SIN is in person at a local office. You can apply for it online but they prefer you to do it in person.

When you apply for a Social Insurance Number card, you must provide proof of identity (i.e. your passport) and because you are not a Canadian citizen also your work permit.

You will not be able to apply for a job without this SIN (not even washing dishes) - they are very strict about this.

In Canada it is customary to tip. There is no set amount or percentage, so go with the flow and follow the example of the locals. For example ; a beer mightl cost you $3.90CAD so you would put a $5 note on the bar and leave what ever coin change you get given.

Oh and often $1 coins are referred to by locals a "loonies" & $2 coins are referred to as " twoonies ".

As wages are low most people with working holiday visas that work during the ski season have two ( or more ) jobs. Be prepared to work hard and play hard.
