The capital city of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur which is also the main entry point for international flights from Australia. Kuala Lumpur International airport is approximately a 1 and ½ hr drive from the city or 40 minutes on the airport train.

Malaysian Airlines now offer the only direct service into KL from Australia (now that Austrian Airlines have ceased operations to Australia. Thai Airlines (via Bangkok), Singapore Airlines (via Singapore) and Cathay Pacific (via Hong Kong) offer the most popular indirect routes.

the currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (Approximately 2.78 MYR for 1 Australian Dollar)

Main tourist highlights include:
Kuala Lumpur’s main attractions are the Petronas Twin Towers, the KL tower, Batu Caves as well as great shopping in China Town, Bukit Bintang and the KLCC. The colonial port of Malacca just south west of KL is also a great day trip from the capital

Peninsular Malaysia has a number of highlights which include The Cameron Highlands, with it’s cool climate and relaxed pace. The Tamara Negara National Park, known for it’s trekking and wildlife. As for beach resorts, the islands of Langkawi and Penang on the West Coast are favourites. The Perenthian Islands, Tioman Island, Redang Island and Kuantan on the East Coast provide a chance to sample some of Malaysia’s less visited beaches. All beach resorts will offer an array of various water sports and other activities.

Malaysian Borneo is made up of Sabah and Sarawak, both have an abundance of wildlife including the chance to see wild and orphaned Orang Utans. The entry point for Sabah is Kota Kinabalu, with Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia as it’s backdrop. Sabah also has great diving opportunities. Kuching is the entry point for Sarawak and is noted for it’s wildlife and nature as well as the chance to see some of the indigenous tribes of the area.

Australian passport holders do not need a visa to travel to Malaysia as long as they are staying less than 90 days.
