Where to Live in the UK

The vast majority of Australians with working holiday visas head for London.

Ask any Londoner; "where do the Aussies live in London"? Chances are they will say Earls Court. Well that might have been true 20 years ago and you can still see the Aussie connection in places like the Prince of Tec pub (where the sign announces that you are entering Australian territory when you enter!) but the truth is that Earls Court is just too expensive for budget travellers now.

Most working holidaymakers in London now live in flat shares in less well known, and quite drab, suburbs such as Neasden, Willesden, Leyton, Dollis Hill, Shepherds Bush and Acton (the latter argubaly the new capital of Australian London.

If you are staying for a while a house share is probably best. As you might expect you will have to come up with a bond (or your share of a bond). Be careful with some landlords as many of the tenant safeguards that Australia has (rental bond boards and the like) are not replicated in the UK.

A great first step to finding a place to live is to visit gumtree.com the community notice board full of house shares, jobs and travel partners. Or TNT magazine's online version is another option.
